How Google decides which pages it cites

Google cites a fraction of the pages it ranks.

Google builds AI Overviews from its own index, but only pulls content from a limited subset of those pages. A few signals separate the pages it cites from the ones it merely ranks.

Lead with the answer

AI Overviews lift content out in pieces. A paragraph that opens with a direct, self-contained answer is more likely to be used in a generated response. A page that buries the answer under preamble, or splits it across sections, gets skipped even when it ranks.

Schema tells Google what a page is about so it doesn't have to guess. Author bylines and linked sources communicate expertise and authority, increasing the chances the content will be pulled into an AIO.

Link-free answer blocks

Our research found that answer paragraphs with links are cited less often. Keep those paragraphs link-free, and concentrate internal links in navigation and related-content areas where they still pass equity.

Fresh content

Google weighs freshness more heavily in AI Overviews and AI Mode than other AI search systems do. A recently updated page with current data is more likely to be cited than competitor content that hasn't been refreshed, regardless of how it ranks.

The research

The authority you built to rank doesn't carry into the answer.

When Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands to find what drives visibility in AI Overviews, the strongest signal wasn't domain rating. It was how widely a brand is mentioned across the web.

Domain rating, the metric you spent years building, correlated far more weakly with whether a brand showed up in the Overview.

Our own Quarterly Search Report found the same pattern from the other direction. Across 177 brands, the link between site authority and AI visibility was effectively zero, and the large majority showed up in no AI answers at all.
