Is AEO just another term for SEO, or something completely different?
Answer engine optimization is best viewed as an extension of SEO, not a replacement. It leverages many of the same fundamentals (quality content, good on-page structure, backlinks, etc.), but it zeroes in on a specific goal: optimizing for answer engines.
Think of SEO as getting you to rank, and AEO as getting you featured. They work hand-in-hand.
For example, improving a page for AEO (making content more concise and question-focused) often improves traditional SEO performance, too. But AEO also covers new ground (like monitoring how content is picked up by AI models).
So, AEO isn’t completely new. It’s an evolution of SEO with slightly shifted focus.
How can we tell if our content is being used in AI answers (like ChatGPT or Google’s AI results)?
There are a few ways.
For Google’s AI snapshots (SGE), we can look at the search results when that feature is active. If your content is contributing, you might see your site cited in the overview. We have tools and processes to track these instances.
It’s trickier for AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude, because their knowledge is based on training data and real-time retrieval. However, we’ll run test prompts with browsing enabled to see if and how your pages are referenced.
We treat appearance in chatbots as an emerging metric. For instance, tracking if your content is mentioned by Perplexity (which actively cites sources) as a sign of visibility.
In short, we combine manual spot-checking, specialized tools, and analysis of server logs (for unusual bot activity) to gauge when and where your content is showing up in AI-driven results. We’ll share these insights with you as part of our reporting.
Will optimizing for answer engines hurt my regular SEO or change our content style too much?
Quite the opposite! Done right, AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your overall SEO.
Google’s own guidance and algorithm updates in recent years favor content that is helpful, authoritative, and structured for clarity (which is exactly what AEO is about).

Significant traffic or conversion lifts can take a bit longer, typically a few months as the changes roll out across more pages and as search engines recognize the improvements. If you have a lot of content, we often tackle it in waves, so you’ll see a steady uptick over each phase.
AEO isn’t an overnight magic pill (and be wary of anyone who says any AEO is instant), but compared to some traditional SEO efforts, we’ve found AEO-driven optimizations often punch above their weight.

Do we need a lot of new content to do AEO, or can we optimize what we have?
We always want to start by improving assets you’ve already invested in. Most companies have a trove of content we can easily position to win answer placements with some small changes.
